Fashion is something we often talk about in our daily lives, and it's an important part of expressing our personality and style. The role of the photographer in capturing this luminous world cannot be ignored. Whether it's a fashion show, a lookbook shoot, or a commercial shoot, you'll find photographers everywhere you go. Photography plays an important role in inspiring us, shaping our brand identity and communicating it to consumers.

This is why photographers are so essential in the fashion industry. In today's spotlight, we talk to Heo Jangbeom, a photographer who focuses on fashion and portraiture, about what it means to be a "photographer".

Q. I was wondering why you first decided to become a photographer.

I originally majored in computer science. I started picking up a camera for a living 8 years ago and have been doing photography ever since. I happened to be traveling in Japan and attended a fashion show under the guise of being a photographer, and that was the catalyst. She then decided to change her career path to participate in fashion shows in Korea.

I realized that fashion and photography are "arts" that combine my feelings and expressions.

Q. You have an active social media presence, does it help your work?

After 20 years in the U.S., I turned to social media to find modeling communities and hashtags for new ideas. To be creative and collaborate with a wide range of people, I studied trends and actively communicated with them, which helped me to do what I do today.

I think photographers, in particular, need to be eager to learn about new features, updates, and trends so that they can apply them quickly.

Q. What makes Korean photography different from overseas?

The biggest difference is that Koreans prefer bright, crispphotos. So sometimes international brands reach out to us and ask for style changes. It also seems that Korean photographers are relatively more concerned with the value of their photos rather than money and want to maintain their own style.

Q. AI is a hot topic in every industry these days, how do you feel about it as a photographer?

I think AI is a tool at the end of the day. It's all about how you utilize it. The role of a photographer seems to be to focus on emotion and creativity to produce good results. Of course, as AI advances, we're going to be taking fewer photos. I think it's going to be more about image expression and creativity, which AI doesn't do. Instead of worrying about whether AI will displace jobs, it's time to start thinking critically and thinking about new ways to use it.

Q. What would you say about fashion photography?

Fashion photography is all about being creative and not having a set answer. It's all about challenge and making something special with your own style. I also tell others that they need to be open-minded and updated. It's important to get the model and the clothes to work well together, and it's also important to move away from what's popular and go for originality. This allows you to create something different that stands out from the crowd of fashion photos.
